Twins-White Sox Preview 2008-06-07

Twins-White Sox Preview 2008-06-07
A tirade from manager Ozzie Guillen appears to have jump-started the Chicago White Sox at the plate, and it's providing them with results.

The AL Central-leading White Sox hope they can continue their offensive resurgence and secure their fifth straight victory as they continue their four-game series with the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

Less than a week ago, Guillen ripped his team's offensive effort, saying he was "sick and tired" of watching the club struggle after it managed only nine runs while losing three of four games at Tampa Bay.

The White Sox (34-26) have responded to their manager while winning the first four games of their seven-game homestand, totaling 31 runs and collecting at least 11 hits in each contest.

They had 16 hits, including four home runs, in a 10-6 victory over Minnesota (31-30) on Friday to open this series.

"I want some offense. They made me shut up," Guillen said. "I got some offense."

Carlos Quentin hit a three-run homer - his team-leading 16th - during a six-run fifth inning for Chicago, which has also won a season-high five straight at U.S. Cellular Field.

A.J. Pierzynski drove in two runs, while Joe Crede went 4-for-4 and homered twice after sitting out Thursday with a bruised right wrist.

"We definitely don't have a problem with getting guys on," Crede, who is batting .424 (14-for-33) with four homers and five RBIs in his last nine games, told the team's official Web site. "It's just a matter of getting those big hits. We've been able to do that in the first four games of the homestand."

Friday's win also increased the White Sox's division lead to 3 1/2 games over the second-place Twins, who have lost five of eight after a four-game winning streak.

Chicago chased right-hander Nick Blackburn after four innings - the sixth time in eight games that a Twins starter has failed to last through the sixth.

"Rough night for us pitching. The ball was flying all over the place. I think we all saw that," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said.

Gardenhire will look for a better effort from Livan Hernandez (6-2, 4.81 ERA), who is 0-1 with a 6.93 ERA in his last four starts.

He gave up five runs and a season high-tying 13 hits in six innings Monday, when he didn't factor in the decision of a 6-5 win over the New York Yankees.

The right-hander now makes his second career appearance at U.S. Cellular Field, where he limited the White Sox to one run and nine hits in a 13-1 rout on May 7. It was his 44th career complete game, and first with Minnesota.

In that outing, Hernandez defeated Mark Buehrle (2-6, 5.20), who will be his opponent again on Saturday.

The left-hander, who is 20-11 with a 3.87 ERA in 34 career appearances - 32 starts - versus the Twins, was roughed up for seven runs and nine hits over 5 2-3 innings against them last month.

Buehrle hasn't been much better recently, going 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA in his last two starts. He was somewhat effective Sunday, allowing three runs and seven hits in six innings of a 10-inning, 4-3 loss at Tampa Bay.
