Minnesota Twins Roster Report 2009-04-11

Minnesota Twins Roster Report 2009-04-11
The Twins are no closer to figuring out how to wedge four outfielders into three positions, but training camp convinced them it's a great problem to have, especially since the offense is a question mark until C Joe Mauer is ready to play. The only concern about the rotation was that RHP Scott Baker's shoulder soreness isn't chronic.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP R.A. Dickey had trouble gripping the baseball with temperatures in the 30s, resulting in four walks over five innings. But the knuckleball pitcher limited the White Sox to four hits in his first start as a Twin -- and the two most damaging, Josh Fields' two-run single and Paul Konerko's solo home run, came on fastballs. Dickey earned praise from manager Ron Gardenhire, but he's likely headed back to the bullpen with Scott Baker apparently ready to rejoin the team.

--3B Joe Crede hit a home run in a Twins-White Sox game at U.S. Cellular Field for the 15th time on Friday, but this time, it counted for Minnesota. Crede, who has yet to miss a game this season, said before the game that his back is entirely pain-free, and he expects to play full time all season.

--RHP Scott Baker limited Class A Port Charlotte to five hits over seven innings Friday while pitching for Fort Myers and said he felt fine afterward. Assuming his shoulder shows no unusual soreness over the weekend, Baker, who is eligible to come off the disabled list Sunday, could take his turn in the Twins' rotation Wednesday against Toronto.

--C Jose Morales doubled, singled and walked twice in his first four plate appearances Friday, making him 5-for-5 with two walks all-time at U.S. Cellular Field. The streak ended with an eighth-inning lineout. Despite the hitting, Morales didn't have a particularly good day behind the plate, dropping a popup and allowing an easy stolen base. If Mike Redmond was not hurting with a strained groin, Morales' playing time might be severely limited.

MEDICAL WATCH:

C Mike Redmond (strained right groin) was injured April 6 and didn't play April 7-8. He returned to action April 9.

RHP Scott Baker (stiff right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 28. He will make a rehab appearance for Class A Fort Myers on April 10.

C Joe Mauer (inflamed sacroiliac joint in his lower back) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2. He reported improvement after being put on a new regimen of medication, but he hadn't begun spring workouts as of April 3. The Twins hope he can return in April.

RHP Boof Bonser (torn right labrum and rotator cuff surgery in February 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list on April 2. He is out for the season.

RHP Pat Neshek (right elbow surgery) went on the 60-day disabled list Feb. 21. He will remain in Florida all summer and targets a return by next spring.
