Minnesota Twins Roster Report 2009-04-08
The Twins are no closer to figuring out how to wedge four outfielders into three positions, but training camp convinced them it's a great problem to have, especially since the offense is a question mark until C Joe Mauer is ready to play. The only concern about the rotation was that RHP Scott Baker's shoulder soreness isn't chronic.

PLAYER NEWS:

--CF Carlos Gomez started two Minnesota rallies Tuesday. He had a leadoff triple in the fifth that led to him scoring the Twins' first run. In the ninth, his improved, more patient approach at the plate led to a two-out walk that started Minnesota's comeback.

If in that same situation last season, what does Gomez do? "Swings and falls down," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire quipped.

--2B Alexi Casilla is now responsible for Minnesota's last two walk-off wins, and both came in nearly identical fashion. On Tuesday, Casilla singled in two runs with a bloop hit to center. Last year, in a dramatic, come-from-behind win against the White Sox that put the Twins ahead of Chicago in the AL Central late in the season, Casilla also hit a walk-off single on a bloop hit, though that winning hit came in the 10th inning.

--RHP Scott Baker, on the disabled list with a sore throwing shoulder, is scheduled to pitch in a game for Class A Fort Myers on Thursday. Baker is eligible to come off the DL on April 12 and is on schedule to return to the big-league club then.

--RHP Matt Guerrier threw two shutout innings Tuesday, the first time he's had a scoreless appearance at least that long since Aug. 21 of last season.

MEDICAL WATCH:

C Mike Redmond (strained right groin) was injured April 6 and didn't play April 7. He hopes to return April 9.

RHP Scott Baker (stiff right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 28. He said the stiffness was so slight, its only effect was causing him to take longer to warm up. However, the Twins decided to take no chances, bumping him out of his Opening Night assignment. Baker is expected to miss just one start.

C Joe Mauer (inflamed sacroiliac joint in his lower back) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2. He reported improvement after being put on a new regimen of medication, but he hadn't begun spring workouts as of April 3. The Twins hope he can return in April.

RHP Boof Bonser (torn right labrum and rotator cuff surgery in February 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list on April 2. He is out for the season.

RHP Pat Neshek (right elbow surgery) went on the 60-day disabled list Feb. 21. He will remain in Florida all summer and targets a return by next spring.
