Minnesota Twins Notes, Quotes 2008-09-05
--C Mike Redmond started behind the plate Thursday night after C Joe Mauer arrived at the ballpark with sore legs following Wednesday's 11-inning loss. Mauer's day off wasn't total, though. He remained in the lineup as the designated hitter.

--The Twins have lost nine consecutive games against the Blue Jays dating back to last season. They were swept Thursday for the sixth time this year.

--INF Mike Lamb cleared unconditional release waivers Thursday afternoon, and after the game longtime teammate Adam Everett said that Lamb had signed with the Brewers.

--Minnesota lost four one-run games during their 14-game road trip, with their first eight losses coming by a total of 12 runs. They have lost 24 one-run games this season and are 24-24 in one-run contests. When they won the division in 2006, they went 20-11 in one-run contests.

--OF Denard Span started in center field Thursday for the second time in the three-game series, something that could become more regular. Manager Ron Gardenhire said he met with CF Carlos Gomez before Wednesday's game to explain that his playing time could diminish. "I told him this is about winning baseball games and using you the best I possibly can, shortening your swing, and all of those things," Gardenhire said. "I've always been a defensive guy, and ... when he's in center and Span's in right, that's our best defense. I've always (believed in) that, but I'm also trying to make sure I get enough offense out there to pick up our pitchers, too."

BY THE NUMBERS: 18 -- Games, through Aug. 31, in which the Twins did not issue a walk, most in the American League. Minnesota starters had walked more than three hitters just four times this season, none since the All-Star break.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "My pitches aren't what they once were, but I go out there with a pure heart. That's the most important thing -- you pitch with heart." -- Twins reliever Eddie Guardado.
