Minnesota Twins Notes, Quotes 2008-07-29

Minnesota Twins Notes, Quotes 2008-07-29
--1B Justin Morneau entered the game with just a .188 career average (6-for-32) against White Sox starter Mark Buehrle, but he also had seven RBI. Morneau bumped that total to 10 with his two-run homer in the third inning and his run-scoring single in the fifth.

--RF Michael Cuddyer took about 20 light swings and wore his glove for the first time since going on the disabled list June 30. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the team would likely have a better idea of a timetable for Cuddyer's return (which will include a short rehab stint) by the end of the week.

--Twins manager Ron Gardenhire stacked his lineup with hitters who'd had success off Chicago starter LHP Mark Buehrle, even if that meant putting his backup catcher in at DH. Mike Redmond entered the game 12-for-25 in his career against Buehrle and went 2-for-3 against the lefty.

--CF Carlos Gomez felt healthy enough to play, and Ron Gardenhire said the 22-year-old would likely be in Tuesday's starting lineup. He entered the game in the eighth inning. Gomez had been out since Friday when he left Progressive Field in Cleveland on a backboard after a collision with the outfield wall.

--Minnesota will decide whether to trade, activate or designate SS Adam Everett, who could also continue his rehab assignment if he agrees to. Everett's 20-day rehab stint (strained right shoulder) expired Monday night, and manager Ron Gardenhire said the shortstop was scheduled to arrive in Minnesota on Tuesday morning for discussions.

BY THE NUMBERS: 16 -- Number of walks OF Denard Span, current Twins leadoff man, amassed in 114 plate appearances.

15 -- Number of walks CF Carlos Gomez, former Twins leadoff man, compiled in 424 plate appearances.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "When you're running that fast, the warning track is very small." -- Manager Ron Gardenhire, asked after Carlos Gomez left a game on a backboard due to a violent collision with the outfield wall at Progressive Field in Cleveland if the center fielder has a difficult time using the warning track to judge how close he is to the wall.
