This time, the target is 35-year-old Casey Blake, and at least the Twins are familiar with him. The Dodgers' stretch-drive pickup played 29 games in two stints with Minnesota earlier this decade before signing with Cleveland, where he spent six productive seasons.
The Twins are one of seven or eight teams inquiring about Blake, according to agent Jim McDowell, and the framework of a contract has been discussed. But it's possible that Blake's desire for a three-year deal might cool Minnesota's interest, particularly given their experience with veteran signees last year alone. Minnesota traded, released or benched Lamb, Livan Hernandez, Craig Monroe and Adam Everett.
Smith has been exploring other options, too. He contacted the Rockies about Garrett Atkins, though the price is believed to be high. He has inquired about Seattle's Adrian Beltre, though a change in management has delayed any Mariners decision-making.
The Twins can take their time in resolving the position, because they still have the option of sticking with their late-season platoon: right-handed-hitting Brendan Harris and left-handed-hitting Brian Buscher. They are young, relatively steady and inexpensive, though Minnesota only received seven home runs from the position in 2008, ranking 13th in the American League.
